The nature of the class and the students
The classes I was assigned were two grade three classes; 3A and 3B, comprising 15 and 17 students respectively. Everyone was an ESL learner with Sinhala as the first language. The students were diverse in gender, proficiency, and religion. There were both hyperactive learners and silent participants, but significantly, 3B was more energetic and hyperactive compared to the 3A class, where the students were more focused and composed.
Seating pattern
The students sat in pairs that they changed daily. If necessary, the teacher could rearrange the classroom into a full circle in the spare space.
Procedure for English lessons throughout the week
The syllabus was Nelson's Pupil and Student Book 3. The main focus was on grammar and vocabulary. Each Friday, the teacher takes dictation practice from the dictation sheet given at the beginning of the term.
Teachers
The teacher of the grade 3 classes was Mrs. Gimhani Basnayke, an experienced English language teacher. She was highly committed and maintained a confident demeanour that affected student performance. The rapport between the teacher and the students and how she eliminates wrong behaviours and disciplines students are rather impeccable.
Students' needs and interests
Compared to the government school learners of the same
age (8/9 years old), these learners are at an upper level. They had a rather
commendable speaking skills but need to improve their writing skills.
Through casual talks with the students and observation, it was evident that students enjoyed playing games and drawing during the lessons. Thus, as their teacher for the coming month, I decided to incorporate games and hands-on activities into the lessons.
Abilities of the students
As a diverse classroom, the students showcased various
mental and physical abilities. While some learners were hyperactive and keen on
engaging in physical activities, some students preferred written exercises.
